take over you when responding to a post, or when you are out of the
blue publishing something?<br />
<br />
Why do I ask you this if the article is supposed to be Social Networks related?<br />
<br />
Well, let me ask you another question: did you know the term
“Sentiment Analysis” is a buzz word on the higher hierarchical levels of
organizations such as Amazon, Dell, Google, Microsoft; aside from
Facebook and Twitter, and many others?<br />
<br />
The main reason is that big corporations are trying to target their
marketing based on the type of emotions we express when using Social
Networks. The small and mid-size social media blogs and consultancy-type
businesses and individuals are also implementing some kind of system to
help them sell their own products and services to small fry, while
trying to hit the jackpot in the process.<br />
So, every time we post something like “I hate (insert cellphone company here)’s billing! They put me on-hold for 20 minutes and then I got disconnected.” Or something like “I love my new car! It’s great on gas, stylish and easy to drive!” All those words and expressions are being collected, analyzed and managed so that they can more easily know where they need to focus on improvements, or where to increase prices, for instance.<br />
<br />
Being said that, know that Sentiment Analysis is still in its infancy, although making strides quickly.<br />
For example, when we post a comment along with a picture so that we
are being sarcastic, cynical or ironic; such as in “You gotta love our
politicians.” And the pix depicts such person(s) caught in the act
wasting our tax money, the technologies cannot simply differentiate the
intention of our message… yet.<br />
<br />
Or when we use abbreviations and/or emoticons, such as in “My neighbour’s dog died! :D" or “My neighbour’s dog died! :-(" or “My neighbour’s dog died! :-)". Same sentence, but different emotion shown. Even the slight change in order: “My neighbour’s dog… :D …died!” is still difficult for a computerized algorithm to decipher.<br />
<br />
The main thing here is that, each and every one of your comments is
being analyzed today. That’s why you start to notice a trend on the
advertising they post every time you go to YouTube, for example. Based
on your searches, posts, Tweets, and so on… all you interact with online
while using their systems (Social Media and others) is there for them
to target you.<br />
<br />
There you have it. Don’t be surprised by what the type and amount of
advertising you start experiencing on your main sites and how it matches
your moods and ways to express yourself, it is all based on you.<br />
<br />
Therefore, do not reply here with a negative comment. ;)Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-87882364819727116282012-08-19T19:15:00.001-07:002012-08-19T19:15:55.621-07:00The Fight is not on Facebook

<div class="MsoNormal">
The day is fast approaching.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yes, you and I keep reading the tweets and posts and all
those messages, images, and ideas. But the fight is not here where the screen
stares at you: all of us in your circles know that. The fight is on the street.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Keep posting, sharing, liking and using these devices to
contact your people. But realize that these Social Media pages are only tools
that allow us to share the times and places where we can really manifest
ourselves. Talk to all people you see on a daily basis: you don’t need to
prepare a speech; a simple “I believe the best option is…” while you order
coffee, or a “we need to talk to elders too…” when at your little one’s soccer
practice, will do.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Action. On the street. Not here on the screen.</div>

Talk to the rest of them, not everybody is connected all the
time or at all. Camps, protests and manifestations are one way, but there are
many others: the thing is to talk and, if necessary, shout.</div>

Stop criticizing. Get up and start fighting.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
While attending webinars and similar events about Social
Media and the way we all take advantage of latest technologies, I noticed there
is something that stands out again and again: what we post and mainly the way
we post it tells lots about whom we are and what we represent.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most Social Media presenters believe their audience is
aiming to establish or grow their business and brand on the Web utilizing the
latest available features. Therefore, they give advice on the best practices
and the latest trends and tools to accomplish just that. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, for the rest of us, there is not much advice they
can or want to provide because it is precisely their business to focus on
businesses.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you are establishing your presence on the Web with Social
Media tools, bear in mind your potential customers and existing clientele
probably understand very well what you are posting; after all your goods and
services are not foreign to their needs. Post anything and everything with as
much freedom as if you are saying or writing a sales pitch with absolutely
nobody watching over your shoulder. Do it as freely as if nobody will ever read
it, and that will guarantee a flow of ideas that will certainly convey a great
message. You can always come back to edit to make it look even better.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Conversely, if all you are doing is communicate with friends
and family, the language you use, the images you upload and everything that
will become public, shape your identity. Those postings also shape the
perception people around have of you. All of them, not only the first degree
acquaintances.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Rule of thumb: before sharing something you would consider
offensive or out of place, think it twice. If you believe it can offend
someone, it is very likely it will do exactly that.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Even if your friend has just posted a funny picture or
comment, but that includes specific people you know will be affected, it is
safer to simply leave it as is and where it is. Do not touch it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Enter the referee: he or she can be someone you care about
whose age is between eight and fifteen. Imagine that this person is listening
or reading absolutely everything you are saying and posting. If the referee
raises his or her eyebrow to something you intend to publish, it is certainly
not a good idea to do so. There is always a place and time for everything;
letting unconditionally everybody know about certain comments or images is merely
not appropriate.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As with certain public displays on the real world, the fact is
that doing something that is not illegal does not make it right, or morally
correct.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You don’t need a warning from the ref every time you commit
a fault, do you?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Choose your referee.</div>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-73355537078724351402012-07-29T12:05:00.003-07:002012-07-29T12:05:54.169-07:00Internet Privacy, last part (for now, this is a recurrent subject)<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Imagine you are at a conference or travelling on public transportation.
Then, somebody starts commenting and asking lots of questions interrupting the
presenter constantly. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Or one of the
passengers starts misbehaving, annoying everybody. The presenters or other
members of the travelling group might be tempted to call security, and perhaps
that will happen, having to remove that person, forcefully.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Such scenes could be similar to when we spot a suspicious
backpack left in a very public place. We will always be prompted to act and do
something about it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now imagine there is another person in that conference or at
the public transport not really calling attention, but planning something bad
for the rest of the people around them. If the latter scenario is possible,
then all attendees to the conference or travellers are suspects, right?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That’s one of the most invasive currents of thought behind
governments and police departments to want to be watching over our shoulders
what we do online. It doesn’t matter whether we are the Dalai Lama or Mother
Teresa or a very simple low profile citizen of the world. Our every move would
be recorded and stored indefinitely. We would lose our online privacy at the
very moment such a bylaw passed as law. Forever.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With the incredible amounts of data on the Web, and such
records growing exponentially day after day, in order to implement a mechanism
to track and store all we do online it would need to be very good and smart
systems, controlled by not just one entity for the extraction of information to
be really effective. Such withdrawal of individual evidence would take place only
when necessary, and there would need to be warrants and orders, similar to the physical
ones, for anybody to get access to our information.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a way we are already in that position of letting people
know about us: we post pictures, type statuses and send messages to those in
our circles and acquaintances lists. No less, no more.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, if there is a leak of data of any kind, then such
information we trusted only to known friends and family members might be used by
criminals, probably with disastrous consequences.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Being said that, if we allow governments and police to
monitor activity, that might also mean less unlawful activity due precisely to
more virtual police force deployments.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Although there would be more good than bad if we put all that
in the scale of a better world, the possibility that harmful activity could
results from our allowing of data to be collected and analyzed, although slim,
would still exist. It is that low percentage of risk that bothers us.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Simply put, no system
is perfect, and it gets worse when many hands are mixing the dough. Human error
is imminent.</div>

There you go.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Me?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I would like to
see more control, but not to the point that our online surveillance becomes
something like a regime. I would trust such task to the global scientific
community after a carefully and planned strategy is determined, but would be very
much concerned if governments get too much involvement in the planning and
surveillance process.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">This is a hot topic.
Received some feedback here, via FB and thru other messaging systems. Thanks
for taking the time to reply and comment on it. Hope you do it more often.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Apparently, there is some confusion and misunderstanding with
regards to what the policing entities would be doing if we allowed them to
watch our online activities.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To start, nobody will be fixating their eyes on a lot of
monitor screens watching live what every one of us does online. The system
would be something similar to those closed-circuit video surveillance cameras
that allow recording and therefore can be used to check a particular event
after it happened. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It would be similar to the way they analyze the audio and
video recordings after a shop break in, or at a corner store or gas station
incident; also there would be “black-boxes” like those on trains and planes
that keep the main data on events sequences. Such records would be extracted only
if and when needed.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, there would be some intelligence attached to the
systems too: monitors that would be able to analyze data traffic, identify and
single out the origin of certain messages and attitudes to detect sex
offenders, for instance; and obviously highlight the activities of spammers and
hackers.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To continue, know that police already counts on significant
power to search for criminal conduct on the Internet. It wouldn’t be that
different than it is right now, only more expeditious and easier for them to
manage warrants, for instance.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, in terms of everybody’s security, these policing
entities would be able to act both proactively and reactively. The main
advantage would be that criminal activity could be spotted sooner, evidence
would be taken quickly and in a chronologically way; and warnings, tickets and
warrants could be created for existing and would-be pornographers, spammers and
hackers.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, in terms of safety for all of us when using the Web, we
could experience better peace of mind knowing that our children can be using computers,
phones, tablets, game consoles and all those devices without becoming a target.
For us, Spam certainly would be decimated too, and hacking activity would be greatly
minimized. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Simply put, if we are not involved in any kind of negative
activity on the Internet, we’d have nothing to worry about: the scenario could
be compared to when we go to a nice beach town we’ve never been to and seeing a
police element at every corner. We could certainly feel good about that or not
even notice it if our behaviours don’t break the law. However, if we are there
with not-so-nice intentions, then perhaps we would feel uncomfortable, nervous,
or even threatened. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m not saying systems would be perfect or that monitoring
us all is a good thing. In this particular article, I’m only pointing to the
positive aspects of enhancing the Internet surveillance powers of police for
all of us. Most other bloggers and news writers will certainly pen way more
than these few paragraphs about how it will negatively affect us: it is simply
easier to criticize, condemn and complain than to see the good side of things.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There will be plenty of time and space to cover the negative
aspects too. In the meantime, here you have a few reasons to think about why
such initiative could bear more good than bad.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Any other good outcomes you can think of?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If passed, which entities should be allowed the privilege to
search what you do online?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Would you rather trust a private company instead of the
government or police for doing this?</div>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-51002984455284961922012-07-15T11:24:00.002-07:002012-07-15T11:24:47.504-07:00Internet privacy<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">I will go into detail
later on the many implications it would carry to let governments and police
departments to be able to track our individual activities online. In the
meantime, I have a few comments and question for you.</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While almost everyone protests or has something to argue, or
at least comment, when we hear the news that our lawmakers have a proposal to
allow governments to be able to eavesdrop on our online activities, current and
past; we seem not to notice we are already creating a trail that anybody could
be able to put together. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Not only police would use such traces if necessary: <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>already there have been cases in which people
have been fired because their bosses found out they were posting their
activities on the very days they reported as being sick. Divorces have been
filed by the spouses that have found out email and chat conversations and histories
between their ex-loved one and somebody else. There have even been cases that
go to court in which a Second Life love or affair interferes with the real life…
the implications are many and varied. Some of them are difficult to believe,
and even more difficult to deal with.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But, coming back to the trail: do you realize that a lot of
what you do on line is permanent (see <a href="http://hectorcuriel.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/immediacy-and-permanency/">Permanency</a>)
and has a date and time stamp attached? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That means that practically anybody can follow your on-line
history. Are you one of those people that post practically everything around
you at any moment and place? Do you allow your devices to automatically post
your location at a particular time? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Is all that really good? Does it benefit you? Does it
benefit anybody?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m not trained on anything related to police or private
investigation, yet I know some people I could recreate their everyday
activities with better accuracy than what a police investigator could have come
with just ten years ago. Worse, a stalker or similar likeminded individual can
do that too.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, what would the real implications of allowing governments
to be able to retrace our steps be? Aren’t your acquaintances so aware of our
daily activities already?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Technologically, it is possible to log everyone’s actions
through our devices’ addresses, applications and even coordinates. The ISPs and
telecommunication companies we pay for those services count on tools that would
allow police or any other entity know about our online activities very
accurately, to the second. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, what we seem to be against if precisely Big Brother
watching over our shoulders. We seem to be content letting everybody else know
what we want them to know, despite the fact that we are letting way more people
than intended know about it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Allowing police to monitor activities would help capture
kidnappers, child pornographers, fraudulent transactions and many more criminal
activities. It would be a matter of perhaps minutes as opposed to months of
investigations and evidence gathering.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, what exactly are we against when we hear about the
possible imposition of such measures? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Where do you stand?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What is your take? </div>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-88884535873665544702012-07-09T12:57:00.000-07:002012-07-09T12:57:28.437-07:00Immediacy and permanency<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Image is everything.<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well, not exactly. But in a way, what we wear on our backs,
the shoes we walk on, the vehicle we use, or glasses, hats, scarves, watches,
mobile phone, and all that somehow wraps our body or part of it affects the way
we are perceived by others.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, when it comes to communicating, all those
implements suddenly lose importance, and the degree to which they affect such
communication diminishes to become practically zero. Surely you’ve met people
that dress with the most expensive garments but their social status; education
and culture don’t match the fabrics. And most likely you’ve also met those that
dress comfortably and humbly and yet their values, morals, knowledge and everything
else surpasses by much the other person’s dressing codes.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What marks a huge difference in the virtual Social Networks
and all other ways of communicating through these electronic media is that we
have to be precise in our conveying of messages. Here, clothing is optional,
and the devices we use don’t show up; they are just a mechanism that allows us
to talk to each other.<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In these instances, the way we express ourselves is the
“clothing”. There are no valid pretexts to demonstrate our education is less
than what we really have acquired. Trying our best to use proper
capitalization, punctuation, syntax and grammar is the way we really show who
we are. The type of words we choose, the way we put one after another, the length
of the sentences, whether we ask much or say many things; absolutely all that plays
a role in outlining our presence.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have heard and seen people apologizing or giving excuses for
their poor typing, explaining that the way they write words is –according to
them- fashionable, or that they use all capitals because that way they would
write faster not having to accentuate some words, or that doing it this or that
way other people won’t notice they don’t have good typing skills or good enough
ways to communicate.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Guess what? Fashion comes and goes, while tradition and
manners stay; uppercase-only needs punctuation too; and the people we write to
and everybody who can read what we post already knows us, right?<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If they are in our acquaintances lists, they know us already:
they know who and how we are, and even why we are. So, who are we trying to
fool?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The way you express yourself here and everywhere else defines
you. It outlines who you are and the type of person you are. In brief, it shows
your net worth as a person.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Clothing is optional.</div>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-58231320655634180782012-06-04T13:31:00.003-07:002012-06-04T13:31:45.536-07:00Say, What?<div class="MsoNormal">
So, we are talking to some friends about regular topics when
Franc interrupts yelling “Look! I found 10 cents!” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Very likely some of us will simply dismiss the comment; some
others might be waiting for the continuation of Franc’s joke, noticing in a few
seconds that there is no joke.<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Then, some other day in a similar scenario it is Lira who
comes crashing: “Look! I found ten dollars!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here, some will react and perhaps ask where and how she
found the money; some will her to buy something for them too, and so on. This
incident very probably would not only interrupt the current topic, but also
start a new one.<br />
<br />
Then, at a different time it is you who comes jumping and
screaming: “Look! I found one hundred dollars!”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
See the reaction around, this is really something isn’t it?
This would definitely kill whichever current topic is discussed, creating a new
instant topic that might linger among us for a long time.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What kind of posts do we do? Do we brag about our ten cents?
Are we the types that says “good morning” or “I’m having lunch…” or “I’m tired”
simply because we are in front of the screen and have nothing better to say?<br />
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: small;">Could it simply be our <b>Fear
of Isolation and Willingness to Speak Out</b> as Gi Woong Yun and Sung-Yeon
Park suggest? </span><span style="font-size: x-small; line-height: 200%;">(Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jcmc.2011.16.issue-2/issuetoc"><span style="color: windowtext; line-height: 200%; text-decoration: none;">Volume 16, Issue 2, </span></a></span><span style="font-size: x-small; line-height: 200%;">pages

</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Are our posts really important or interesting or exciting or
at least funny? Do they convey a positive message? Do those make us think and
react? Commit to something?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I hope yours do. Our general feeling is that those acquaintances that do not
interact with us much, or that do not do it with anybody else, are people that
have forgotten they have an account or that they only use the Social Networks
sporadically, and therefore are weak users. However, sometimes those weak links
are the ones that represent the biggest threats precisely because of the
seemingly passivity associated with them (Mark S. Granovetter, The Strength of
Weak Ties, American Journey of Sociology, May, 1973, Stanford University, <br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Remember that quality will always be more powerful than
quantity. A quality relationship equals a lot of mediocre ones. Therefore, a
high number of contacts in your profile does not mean much; a close circle of
quality acquaintances is way more valuable than an inflated but empty

Who are your friends now?</div>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-15607253532527644602012-05-28T09:46:00.003-07:002012-05-28T09:46:53.301-07:00Nothing PersonalSay, you are at a party, a family reunion or simply hanging out with
friends and somebody approaches you offering to sell their products or
services. How do you take it? It is fun isn’t it? What? You don’t like
it? Really?<br />
<br />
Well, let’s imagine the same scenario in the Social Networks you use:
are you trying to sell something to your peers, family and friends? If
not, great. You are managing your circles in an appropriate way.<br />
If yes, by now you should be aware that there is a place for that.
Actually, there are many places for that. In the real world it is not
very suitable to mix business and pleasure, and this same standard
applies to Social Networks: it does not matter how polished your on-line
presence or the goods you are offering are, if you are mixing potential
clients with friends, the latter soon will not be there and will try to
avoid you like the plague.<br />
<br />
The least we can do when we do this is explain on our posts why we are
offering such items, or re-invite people in our contacts indicating that
your particular profile will be advertising and updating on products
constantly. This way, the commercial-bound contacts can stay in your
circle or group, and the people who have a warmer relationship with you
can opt-out.<br />
<br />
The absolute best is to put things in the proper places by:<br />
+ Creating a Website which only intent is to do all the advertising, marketing and updating on what you are selling<br />
+ Opening a Blog with the same intention a fully developed Website would have<br />
+ Creating a Page –or at least a Group- within Facebook, for example;
this one can do some of the basics a Website can do, and depending on
your on-line ability, it probably would be easier to maintain<br />
+ Use the appropriate ‘Social Networks’ for your service or products: Focus, Linked-In, Xing, Google+, MeetUp, etc.<br />
<br />
Do this and you won’t have any problems knowing whether you are
socializing or selling. When the lines are blurred between who is a
friend or a customer it becomes difficult to establish a particular type
of conversation. Trying to exchange words and information becomes
awkward for them and for you, and then sooner or later they make a
decision on whether you are a friend or a salesperson; once that is
decided it stays like that for a long time, probably forever.<br />
<br />
Have you had those salesperson experiences on-line? What do you think
about the people that do that? Are they still your contacts or friends?<br />
<br />
Remember, if your on-line presence in Social Networks is purely
business related, do just that. Go all out on selling only, and interact
just like a business person.<br />
<br />
Nothing Personal.Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-48981229932377017672012-05-24T09:59:00.001-07:002012-05-24T09:59:56.374-07:00Social Networks NetiquetteHave you just reposted what a contact or friend said to all his or
her friends, which are practically the same ones you have? Do you
realize most of those cascading messages are simply ignored precisely
because of this?<br />
<br />
Have you noticed the only people that reply to your postings are
practically the same ones, those that seem to be on-line all day? There
is a very important factor that contributes to that.<br />
Netiquette (Etiquette on the Net) for Social Networks has practically
the same text rules E-Mail Netiquette does, but there are other
parameters to consider when it comes to the former. For example, did you
know that what you post will be there forever? Yes, even those rude
messages you didn’t really intend to publish are still there.<br />
<br />
So to start, here are just a few of the most basic Social Networks
Netiquette rules. And by the way, if you really feel the need to repost
what has been done already, at least say why you think it is important
to be there again.<br />
<br />
The basics apply on every type of written communication: be it
E-Mail, TXT messages, tweets, posts, etc. Use proper case, avoid
abbreviations as much as possible, disregard “fashion” writing, write in
just one language (unless of course the message is intended that way),
apply correct grammar and syntax, use accents properly, avoid strange
symbols if at all possible, and remember that emoticons help somehow but
do not convey emotions.<br />
Punctuation matters big time. What you are writing might make sense
to you, but for some of us it is difficult to know what you are saying,
or whether you are saying anything. Is it a question? Then write it as a
question.<br />
<br />
I recall one of my acquaintances wrote something very similar to this in
a chat session: “the meeting went well, the other guy got the job I was
supposed to be. There.” I had a hard time realizing I had missed an
important meeting and could not understand why my friend was alright
admitting that she did not get a position she wanted to have. It made me
feel very bad that I was not there for her, but she seemed to be fine
with the outcome. After a few lines back and forth, that I struggled to
type apologizing for my fault, I realized that all was a
misunderstanding. What she wanted to write was three questions: “The
meeting went well? The other guy got the job? I was supposed to be
there?”<br />
Turns out such meeting hadn’t taken place, and a simple sentence made
both of us go into gray areas explaining and apologizing for something
that had not even happened.<br />
Of course, the best way she could have written that would be something
like this: “Did the meeting go well? Did the other guy get the job? Was I
supposed to be there?”<br />
So, please make it right.<br />
<br />
BTW: Acronyms are not really needed in your text, are they? If so,
and your audience knows them, by all means use them, but if not, a few
mores seconds typing the full words won’t hurt you: and will help the
reader lots. (BTW stands for: By The Way)<br />
Remember that jokingly and irony messages do not go through as
intended, there is no way to convey emotions in a text message, and some
types of verbal communication have no similar in the written world. You
cannot infuse tone to a written sentence, unless you are a professional
writer and have more room to write; and even so the recipients might
misinterpret it. So, be careful when doing those.<br />
<br />
WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS LIKE SHOUTING. It creates a strong but often
wrong message, so use uppercase-only sparingly. Can you stand someone
that shouts all the time? It is also hard to understand what someone
shouting wants to say. It is nicer to read lower and mixed case text,
proper case or lack of it says lots about you.<br />
<br />
Is your conversation private? Make it so then. It becomes awkward
when two contacts post something that only involves or interests them.
The rest of us do not have the need to know about it. Simply take your
friend to private messages or chat and continue there. It would be nice
to apologize to the rest about the slip too.<br />
<br />
Double check your spelling, grammar and proper sentence structure
before hitting “Send”, “Post” or “Tweet”. Remember that lack of those
reflects low education and disregard for seriousness.<br />
To close, thank those contacts that communicate appropriately: this
is, if their posts are interesting, or help you in any way, say so. Do
they make you think, smile, learn, or be positive? Those Netizens
deserve recognition. Do not criticize those that always post the same
empty messages and you always feel like deleting from your contacts but
don’t do out of, um, pity (?)<br />
But do thank and recognize the good ones, especially if they respond to your requests in a timely and appropriate way.<br />
<br />
How you use technology affects your communication and presence. Start
or res-start with these simple suggestions and your circles will be
more enjoyable.<br />
<br />
Any suggestions of your own? Do you relate to those specific friends discussed here? What do you think?Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-43456320874704421752012-05-23T14:04:00.000-07:002012-05-23T14:04:10.768-07:00Your perception on my WallIn trying to answer a few questions from someone who strongly
believes I’m an expert on these fronts, I realized how little we know
about Social Media, despite been using it for so long now.<br />
<br />
I’ll start with a challenge:<br />
Go to the local library or bookstore and try to find a book about Social
Media that focuses on individuals’ usage and interests. You will mainly
find Marketing related books. Try harder and look for something
specific to Social Networks sans the marketing component, it is even
more difficult.<br />
<br />
So, let’s focus on Social Networks and its many branches, uses, benefits and pain points. We’ll touch on the following:<br />
+ Perception<br />
+ Netiquette<br />
+ Personal vs. Business<br />
+ Contacts’ quantity and quality… are they really ‘friends’?<br />
+ Quality and quantity of posts<br />
+ You are what you post/publish<br />
+ …and a few more.<br />
<br />
Some of the listed items are intermingled and can’t be easily
separated. Therefore let’s start with one of the easiest to understand:
perception.<br />
<br />
What you see is different from what I see. And not only because we
have different backgrounds, education, origins, intelligence, age,
culture, thinking, first-language, beliefs, environment, moods,
etcetera. It is also because you might be using a specific computer to
see your page, while I might be using a totally different computer in
terms of display size, browser or App. One of our friends might be using
a tablet or an eBook reader or a new Google-based phone; or I might be
using a tiny Smartphone which only allows me to see one specific
function or section of the full page you are seeing. Also, the type and
number of friends I have is different from the ones you have, it is not
very likely that some of your contacts are also mine. So, the daily
number of posts and messages might be higher for you than it is for me,
or vice versa. Also, some specific symbols, accents and emoticons are
not posted or ‘converted’ the way you thought or intended; so many
things we easily see or thought we typed are not there. Tildes, accents,
diereses and some other symbols change sometimes; you might see them on
your pages, but others simply see a totally different character.<br />
<br />
Therefore, our own perception plays a huge role on the way we
interact with each other. There are many factors that alter the way we
see things on those streams, pages or walls.<br />
The next time you are about to post something, think about what you want

And I guess I have to start by explaining a few things. However, please know that I have not stopped writing during all this time.
The only difference, or better said, the main difference is that my writing has gone on a self-imposed journey; one of research and development, for lack of a better explanation.
See, I have been writing to acquaintances in different fields and geographical areas, I’ve written to those that understand me perfectly and reply with good information and feedback. I’ve done it on a few specific projects. I’ve written to those that don’t know even how to write and that can provide valuable input on an ‘experimental’ area. I’ve written what can be said publicly in a privately only-one-recipient form, and what is private in a public manner (with some discretion, of course). I’ve written in Spanish, English and even French, and I’ve written using smart phones, computers, pen and paper, and even on the sand, on dirty car glasses, and have even left anonymous messages on whiteboards. I’ve done a lot of the opposite too: read master authors, read no-substance magazine articles, read lots friends’ posts in Social Media, etc. etc. In brief, I have not stopped.
Also, life has intervened. Plans have had to be changed many times and some have had to be postponed for weeks, and even months.
So, please know that I’m still here. I just needed some time to put some obstacles aside, organize a few other factors and accomplish a long-term plan that has finally come to completion.
I am auto imposing the resolution to be not more active on this front no, but simply collect results and start posting and re-posting all those messages, ideas and happenings.
So, hang on: there are a few surprises coming.Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-80044990355689985422011-08-03T19:39:00.000-07:002011-08-03T19:40:43.820-07:00Thanks for the BD wishesThanks everybody for so many messages, calls and more. I am unquestionably a very lucky man having such wonderful and diverse group of friends.<br /><br />My day started beautifully sunny, was able to wake up relatively early and go for an easy 5.6 Km run, went to work with really nice people, and even had some time at lunch time to have a Grande Dark Roast cup of coffee (part of it went to my shirt, but the rest has been gladly consumed). Getting back home I found myself replying to many voicemail, email, T and FB messages. So, despite my failed attempts to hide under the laptop, I have been found.<br /><br />Later on I am enjoying my kids’ “surprise dinner” and handmade gifts.<br /><br />So, your wishes have become true: I’m happy to be so healthy, so loved by my family, and counting on all of you around me. I am truly blessed.<br /><br />I definitely can’t ask for more. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! (Salty ones in my eyes).Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-10386230071267575842011-06-25T17:05:00.000-07:002011-06-25T17:08:42.386-07:00Shooting oneself in the footI live in a so called “developed” country. However, in my city, geographical area and other zones; there are many unions that simply exist for the entertainment and make-a-living motive of their leaders. My business and many others, mostly all, are affected by such big unions.<br /><br />The national postal service happens to be on strike. The members of their unions demand better pay, pensions, and everything related to money now and for the future for the workers of an industry that is slowly dying (see related article: <span style="font-weight:bold;">The U.S. Postal Service Nears Collapse</span> @ <a href="http://bx.businessweek.com/united-states-postal-service/view?url=http%3A%2F%2Fc.moreover.com%2Fclick%2Fhere.pl%3Fr4676038466%26f%3D9791">http://bx.businessweek.com/united-states-postal-service/view?url=http%3A%2F%2Fc.moreover.com%2Fclick%2Fhere.pl%3Fr4676038466%26f%3D9791</a>).<br />New technologies have been pushing the need for paper traveling from A to B inappropriate, expensive, slow, irrelevant, not-green, etc. etc. etc. <br /><br />So, these union leaders, in their infinite wisdom, demand that postal workers get ‘better’ working conditions, meaning money. They seem not to realize anybody who nowadays has a job is in <span style="font-style:italic;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">excellent </span></span>working conditions.<br /><br />Consequently, with the strike, such organization has made most of us find workarounds, substitutes, new ways of doing business, and even realizations as to what can be delivered cheaper or not needed to be sent using such service. When the strike ends -it will end soon- even more postal workers will find themselves without a job. The ones that are able to keep their position for whatever reason will find that the volume has decreased, and then, only then, all involved will start realizing they have just shot themselves in the foot.<br /><br />Too bad, too late.Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-44649114281994207612011-06-15T16:06:00.000-07:002011-06-15T16:09:42.380-07:00Lots of flavours...I am now accompanying my apples and blackberries with mango... waiting to see if anybody throws a pineapple or starfruit my way too.Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-65828553538765440892011-05-04T11:30:00.000-07:002011-06-04T09:34:39.827-07:00Vendors and servicesAs of late my phone has been ringing displaying telephone numbers from many different area codes, some easily identifiable some others not. My email in-box has also supported a barrage of messages from many different and undoubtedly new vendors, offering their products arguing that those are the best in their class. <br />Some of those companies which we have had some kind of relationship in the past are coming back with new products, strategies and offerings, sot that we come back to support, offer, comment on, and recommend again.<br /><br />As in your field, the IT landscape changes constantly, but the constant here is that it changes quickly, sometimes in unforeseen directions that catch us unprepared and makes us realize that the best predictions are those that belong in the short-term realm. Trying to plan for long-term trends in IT is just a dream.<br /><br />Needless to say, as trusted business advisers, we have to be ever-observant of such changes in wind direction and adjust the sails appropriately. Products, services and technologies that were relevant just half a year ago, are now surpassed or replaced by new incumbents; and sometimes by some that have been there for years, only under the radar. Some have been so good that we only understand the concepts years after those have been crafted and brought to life.<br />From devices to telecommunication to Internet developments, there are always new and exciting tools our businesses should be taking advantages of.<br /><br />So, although I have to be patient and polite to the junior salesperson trying to convince me about their products (she’s convinced theirs are the best in the world) simply because I approached their booth, visited their website or tried one of their services; I also have had very good conversations and experiences with senior representatives about how their offerings compare to the competition and such. One thing is certain; the number of new companies, new products and new services is only increasing. <br /><br />Better to accept that fact and start clearing up the arena to have such competitors face off.<br /><br />More vendors, more services, more new products. Vote now, and hang on.Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-36013699917522180842011-04-05T15:39:00.000-07:002011-04-30T15:12:55.856-07:00Proximity versus Productivity.It perplexes me that Human Resources decision makers and departmental heads still base their hiring practices only on a few traits, such as years of experience, previous jobs, certifications, and studies in general.<br /><br />Although not always the case, most SMEs are comprised of local talent that usually commute to work on a daily basis. People in the major cities of North America and Europe are so used to commuting for at least fifteen minutes each way, that they even think it is ‘normal’ to do so. In fact, some even consider themselves lucky not having to spend more than half an hour doing it, as that figure is below the average for most major cities.<br /><br />With telecommuting and the current remote technologies we utilize now, commuting time averages have decreased for people whose job involves being in front of a computer most of the day. However, there are still many other functions that require physical presence at the work place. <br /><br />Even if a person travels for only fifteen minutes each way for a year, minus holidays and vacation; such person still wastes 120 hours a year doing nothing. <br />Better rephrased: such person still spends 120 hours a year wasting resources, polluting, making everybody else spend even more time on the roads and, in brief, being counter-productive.<br /><br />A 45 minute commute extinguishes 360 hours a year. That’s fifteen full days a year; if we include sleep time in the equation, that’s a whooping <span style="font-weight:bold;">twenty two and a half days per year</span>.<br /><br />Then the well-rested not-stressed productivity factor needs to be taken into account:<br />Let’s suppose we have two people working in the same department doing very similar work. X is a worker whose qualifications, a combination of experience, education, smarts and all involved and required for the position, gives her a mark of 92. She works with another worker (Y) whose mark is 88.<br /><br />X commute to work is 30 minutes. Y’s is 15.<br />Therefore, we can infer that Y is more relaxed than X. Y will also usually be more on time than X. When leaving, Y could very well take an extra 1 to 5 minutes before rushing out the door. For X, the sooner she leaves the better. X also spends more than double the amount of money needed to commute than Y does.<br /><br />We could measure the productivity gains attained by a more rested worker in terms of emotional intelligence, mind freshness, focus on the tasks, etc. All these without even considering external and disruptive factors in the daily commute such as accidents, power failures, peak-hour fluctuations and such. We can conclude that Y will always be ‘closer’ to the job in every sense. So, let’s give X an 90 mark on proximity and timeliness, while Y receives a 95.<br /><br />That would make X receive a total mark of 82.8, while Y makes 83.6.<br />Needless to say, Y will be way more productive than X. Even if the commuting factor is decreased by an extra point in opposite directions (91 for X, 94 for Y), that makes 83.72 vs. 82.72. This would make X be ahead in ideal scenarios (no disruptions in the daily commute), but in real terms both numbers would be even close, with the extra-work benefits from and for Y: less money spent on commuting, less time doing it; polluting way less than X, etc. In brief, lots of resources saved and a fresher element at work.<br /><br />In terms of community, Y would feel she’s working in and for her community, being a happier person than X, whose day starts having to face the long commute to a place she doesn’t even feel she belongs to…<br /><br />Get the picture? <br /><br />So, why do we keep hiring based on non-community and non-proximity factors? <br />It is true that some key people need to travel more than others, also truth there are some that go to different places all the time, and perhaps have no other option but to do so once or twice per week, but daily?<br /><br />Let’s reset the hiring machine. Local resources preferred.<br /><br />Productivity + savings. What’s not to like?Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-5595881096262302012011-03-08T11:11:00.000-08:002011-03-08T11:14:57.130-08:00Even more Clouds on the HorizonOn September 10, 2010, I sent a link to <span style="font-weight:bold;">Cloudy with a chance of more clouds*</span> <a href="http://businerdss.blogspot.com/2010/09/cloudy-with-chance-of-more-clouds.html">http://businerdss.blogspot.com/2010/09/cloudy-with-chance-of-more-clouds.html</a><br /><br />This week’s <span style="font-weight:bold;">Bloomberg Businessweek</span>’s cover page (March 7 – March 13, 2011 | Businessweek.com) reads “<span style="font-weight:bold;">Put your head in the cloud</span>” <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_11/b4219052599182.htm">http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_11/b4219052599182.htm</a><br /><br />That previous years-old article (Internet years that is) is still valid: if I wanted to edit it to make it more current I would not change a single word. <br />If anything, I can only add that while lots of IT vendors are trying to scramble and reengineer their products to make them more “Cloud-friendly” the fact is that some don’t have a real strategy or even a good concept of what The Cloud is supposed to be.<br />Others however, have some great technology we could all benefit from. <br /><br />Seems like the main deterrents for Cloud adoption are mainly the misunderstanding of subscription-based services instead of the feeling of technology “ownership”; and the perception that we will incur an expense instead of an investment when we port our systems to the The Cloud.<br />Both scenarios can be easily understood by simply applying due diligence, start reading about these trends. In any business and trendy magazine the concept is explained in plain language, and key indicators such as the “<span style="font-weight:bold;">Projected market for cloud computing in 2014 is USD$149b, Gartner</span>” bring attention to how big Cloud Computing is and will be.<br /><br />Even consumers and SoHos are adopting the Cloud, some in a faster pace than companies. They start with the easy to understand services such as on-line data backup, and then when they see the advantages they start switching email, accounting packages, and CRM systems to the cloud too.<br /><br />Is your company already planning to jump on this wagon? What are your thoughts about the so many changes in such a short period of time? With regards to cost vs. benefit? How easy it is to grasp the Cloud concept?<br /><br />Better get your umbrella now.<br /><br />* <a href="http://businerdss.blogspot.com/2010/09/cloudy-with-chance-of-more-clouds.html">http://businerdss.blogspot.com/2010/09/cloudy-with-chance-of-more-clouds.html</a>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7886989495586604571.post-1022259920047084782010-12-31T15:54:00.000-08:002010-12-31T15:55:50.782-08:00My wish for the New Year is also my resolution.You might not believe me, especially if you know me well or have been in touch with me recently, however:<br /><br />In the New Year I do not wish you lots of success, neither health. I do not wish you happy moments or many of those. I do not wish you get more money than what you’ve received, neither good luck.<br /><br />My wish is different this time. <br /><br />I wish you share yourself; not with me only, but with everybody else: I’m sure if you are reading this message you already have and have had way more of any of those items listed in the last paragraph. So, please share. I’m not asking you to sell your car and donate the proceeds to a charitable organization, neither that you open your house to everybody in need of shelter or food.<br /><br />My wish is that you lend a helping hand to those around you: a family member, a co-worker, a classmate, even a stranger. Not in the sense that you start sharing personal data or possessions with a complete unknown person, but rather that you help the old lady cross the busy street, or patiently wait for her to get to the curb. That you ask someone if everything is alright if their face shows a desire to share a situation or frustration. That you help carry the heavy bags a mother is struggling to get across the parking lot while also pushing a stroller. That you help your peer finish his or her job if you already did and have some spare time. That instead of plopping down on the couch at the end of <span style="font-style:italic;">your </span>day you go ask your daughter/sister/son/brother if they needs help with the homework…<br /><br />Simply put, that you lend a hand, a shoulder, a high-five, a nod, anything positive to those that could benefit from your sharing. All these actions should be accompanied by a smile, of course.<br /><br />So, my wish for you this New Year is simply that: share yourself. I am making it my own wish, my hope, and my resolution.<br /><br />My only second wish is that you are with me on this voyage.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Happy New Year!</span>Businerdss As Usualhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975779033948839031noreply@blogger.com0
